Noble Absurdity

This page exists for posting projects/process/works of all kinds that produce or prompt inter-human relations and take place in the Providence, RI public realm.

One example of Noble Absurdity:

THE URBAN TIME MACHINE

The Urban Time Machine was constructed to generate connections and conversations with people of similar interests within the scale of the community. A forty-day window from conception to community performance created the scale of the built project with each day recorded in both drawing and sound. The 40 days of the project are represented with 40 cogs, chain driven, and act as 24 hour clocks turning discs with plectrums attached. Notes are plucked, marking conversations that occurred which helped generate a part of the project. Conversations ranging from avant-garde noise-artists to bicycle chain dimensions continuously re-shaped the project, questioning the idea and role of improvisation in design.  Day forty marked the completion of the instrument's construction and when project participants were invited together for the first performance.  Although the individuals came to hear and witness the Time Machine, it was generated to bring together and create human interactions.

The built Time Machine exists as an instrument played by turning a crank and captures pitch, space, and relative-time in both a visual and auditory display. It now functions as a meme; a tool for generating motivation in artists and community members to practice and create acts that foster interaction. It now requires a community space to exist and inspire curiosity within an interactive setting. It currently resides in a parking garage. If anyone can assist in finding a space for The Urban Time Machine, it would be greatly appreciated.  The piece could be moved to different spaces continuing to reach more community members.
